2005 California League Top 30 Prospects
Cal League Top 30 FAQ Prospects 1-15
Prospects 16-30
16. Ubaldo Jimenez RHP Modesto Nuts(Rockies)
RHP with stuff that is too good to ignore despite
regression since 2004. Does it easy with big old
school delivery. Reaches far back behind him
with arm and wraps hand a bit. Lightning quick
arm. Blew hitters away with easy mid 90's FB
and knee buckling curve while rolling through the
Cal League. Sported a pedestrian 3.98 ERA but
the peripheral numbers were there. K'd 78 in 72.1
innings while allowing only 61 hits. Control has
proven problematic and it continued after
promotion to AA where he walked 31 in 63IP.
Future is still bright but health is esp. worrisome.
17.Mitch Maier OF High Desert Mavericks(Royals)
Super athletic OF had one of the prettiest swings
in league. Too big to catch anymore, bat should
play on OF corner. Excellent hand eye
coordination allows him to sit back and trust his
hands. .336/.370/.583 line in Cal League. Plate
discipline a concern and he struggled mightily in
AA but if you're going to bet on a guy figuring it
out, bet on someone with this kind of swing.
Chance to be solid defender and with versatility
he has some value even if the bat doesn't come on
like I think it will.
18. Garrett Mock RHP Lancaster Jethawks(Dbacks)
Best pure stuff in league besides Volquez.
Aggressive Texas mentality. Brings same low
90's FB and quality secondary offerings to rubber
every night. Numbers aren't telling entire story.
Has bat missing stuff and ability to throw
strikes. Pitches at times like he's worried about
walking guys, when it is obviously not a
problem. Pitches backwards too much. Strike
throwing ability and stuff is there, it's going to
happen for him. May never reach the ceiling his
stuff suggests but he should slot in the middle or
back of someones rotations and eat innings.
19.Eddy Martinez-Esteve OF San Jose Giants(Giants)
Half a player. Controls strike zone well and took
most aggressive hack in league. Makes at bats
count. Pure hitter who can make a park look
smaller. Slowest player in league. Offensive
player on defense. Brutal instincts and zero
interest in getting better with leather. You would
think I would have seen him out for early work at
least once all summer? Playing in the wrong
league. The minute he gets traded to an AL team
his value spikes. Right now he's a liability with
the glove and appears to be completely
indifferent about it. Nice DH.
20. Jason Burch RHP Modesto Nuts(Rockies)
Latroy Hawkins clone who may be biggest
sleeper in league. Hurls sinking bowling balls
towards the plate. Uncomfortable AB's for
hitters. 2.85 ERA in 60IP while allowing only 49
hits. Struck out 73 while walking 25. Potential
plus SL serves as legitimate out pitch. Equally
nasty on both righties and lefties. Struggled upon
promotion into closers role. Very intelligent
player who should have aptitude to handle late
inning duties which makes late season struggles
puzzling. Chance to become a setup man @
Major League level.
21. Ryan Feierabend LHP Inland Empire 66ers(Mariners)
Young lefty with loads of intrigue. Spent almost
all of season as a 19 yr old. Good delivery should
lead to improved command down line. Stuff is
essentially average across board except for his
cambio which should become a plus offering.
Great deception and feel for his change. Gave up
too many hits (186 in 150IP) as a result of
pitching not to walk guys. Might have the dirtiest
pick off move in the minor leagues. Young and
lefthanded with some feel to pitching and solid
stuff- he should figure it out. Next step is to
work towards consis. outings every time out.
22. Jim Miller RHP Modesto Nuts(Rockies)
Deceptive righty with chance to throw aspirin in
the late innings for someone. Worked mostly
with straight yet explosive FB. Hid ball well in
back which led to late and at times laughable
swings. Spinning SL needs more work if he wants
to have a usable secondary pitch. Big league
hitters will spin on 95 center cut. Excelled upon
promotion to AA. .60 ERA in 15IP. Allowed 6H,
K'd 19 and walked 8. Very good arm who should
be pushed to see how far simple arsenal takes
him and if deception continues to prove usable
for him.
23. Juan Morillo RHP Modesto Nuts(Rockies)
Frustrating and enigmatic RHP. Has best FB in
all of minor league baseball. Will touch 98-99
every outing and works in the 95-97 range. FB is
light and hitters get a good look at it. Guys try
and cut in line to face him. When he's on it can be
pretty special but there's a lot that needs to be
cleaned up. Pitches to center of plate with FB
and slows delivery way down in order to baby
SL and CH over plate. Very hard to give up on
this kind of arm but something is missing if your
walking out to the mound every night with 99 in
your pocket and not K'ing a batter an inning.
24. George Kottaras C Lake Elsinore(Padres)
Undersized left handed hitting C. Finds barrel of
bat with ease and shows ability to jerk ball. Pull
heavy approach is worrisome as better pitchers
will be able to attack him. Manages to control
strike zone well (50BB 60K). Simple swing is
short on flash but gets it done. Athletic defender
behind plate who moves around well and has late
carry on his throws. Could stand to stack some
weight on small frame. Continued to hit upon
promotion to AA (.287/.397/.416) LHH catchers
have a tendency to hang around in backup roles,
he should follow that path.
25. Richie Robnett OF Stockton Ports(Athletics)
Toolsy player is as gifted as you will find in
league. Has not played a ton of baseball and I
think his year .243/.324/.440 is somewhat
expected. Crazy fire hydrant build with muscles
on top of muscles. Bat speed and raw power are
all there, needs to tighten up swing path in back
and make more contact (151K). Further behind
the curve defensively than expected but with his
athletic ability there is no reason he can't become
a solid defensive LF. Might benefit from a return
trip to Cal League next year, young enough that it
wouldn't be a huge disappointment.
26. J.P. Howell LHP High Desert Mavericks(Royals)
Polished college lefty who made quick splash in
big leagues(albeit with KC). Baffled hitters in Cal
League 1.96ERA 46IP 33H 48K 24BB with
power curve and soft fastball. Control issues and
lack of even a below average fastball raise some
red flags as well as conventional wisdom calls for
being weary of curve heavy lefties in the low
minors. Got guys out in A ball going FB CV CV.
Savvy and intelligent. The ceiling is relatively low
but his chance of reaching it if not pitching above
and beyond it are incredibly high. Back of
rotation guy at his best.
27. Seth Smith OF Modesto Nuts(Rockies)
Corner OF who had a very nice season as he
became a full time baseball player while leaving
QB duties behind. .399/.353/.458 with 9HR and
45 doubles that hint at more power down line.
Would be more concerned about lofty strikeout
numbers (115 in 112G) if not for horrible vision
that he has and will be corrected in the offseason.
With as bad as his eyes were this year it's almost
amazing to think he posted the numbers he did.
Power may not profile in an everyday role but
it's a pretty good swing off the bench and defense
should improve as he plays more.
28. Clay Timpner CF San Jose Giants(Giants)
Speedy CF who has value as a standout
gloveman. Deceptive power may explode one
year. .291/.334/.397 line left a bit to be desired in
the plate discipline corner from a top of the order
player(93K:34BB). Does things very easy in CF
right now and will only improve as he gets more
and more reps. Is probably ready to make jump
to AA next year. Flat out good baseball player
similar to Steve Finley minus power. Has value
as a 4th OF @ ML level who depending on
timing may play his way into spurts of everyday
play.
29. Andrew Sonnanstine RHP Visalia Oaks(Devil Rays)
Little known righty who used deception to post
some of the minors goofiest numbers. Funky
almost pin wheeling delivery makes hitter
uncomfortable. Fringy stuff along with leagues
best control produced unreal results. Struck out
75 in 64IP while walking only 7. On the year
between two levels he K'd 178 in 180IP while
walking 18. Command could be improved within
zone as evidenced by number of hits allowed.
Worrisome in the sense he is working with one
average pitch at best. I'm a believer as long as he
continues to throw strikes and notch K's.
30. Kevin Frandsen 2B San Jose Giants(Giants)
Great baseball player played well above his
pedestrian tools. Might be the best  player who
played in the Cal League in 2005 from an
immediate, not projecting perspective. Can really
hit. Centers every ball he makes contact with
spraying hard line drives all over the field. Good
swing. Had  a breakout season between three
levels hitting .335. Limited to 2B which hurts
value a bit, didn't show very well in limited
chances @ SS. Can make unbelievable plays but
is prone to kicking the routine ball. Gamer who
makes everyone around him better. Has a future
in some role @ ML level.
